ISO 9001 with Power IMS – which modules cover which chapters

Module-by-module assessment of how far Power IMS supports an ISO 9001-compliant QMS – with a clear focus on the suite's current coverage.

    What this is about

ISO 9001 is the most widely adopted QM standard – and for many organisations the first encounter with a structured management system. The question is no longer whether to digitise but with what. This article maps the modules of the Power IMS suite to specific clauses of ISO 9001:2015 and shows clearly where coverage is already high today and where targeted extensions make sense.

No compliance promise – an honest module-by-module view.

Power QMS – the foundation (very high coverage)

Power QMS directly covers the document- and process-heavy core of ISO 9001:

    • Documented information (clause 7.5): versioning, mandatory comments, parallel approval workflows, complete version history
    • Control of documented information (clause 7.5.3): approvals, distribution, access control, archiving
    • Process approach (clause 4.4): navigable process map as a tree, every process linked to its controlled documents
    • Awareness and competence (clauses 7.2 / 7.3): read confirmations per employee and version as direct evidence
    • Context and interested parties (clauses 4.1 / 4.2): storage and versioning of the context analysis as a controlled document
    • Audit trail (clauses 7.5.3 / 9.2): versions, approvals, distributions and read confirmations directly exportable

This fully covers the mandatory "documented information" part of ISO 9001 – without SharePoint sprawl and without a separate DMS.

Power Audit – internal and supplier audits (high coverage)

Power Audit directly addresses the audit-side requirements:

    • Internal audit (clause 9.2): audit programme, planning, checklists, findings, action tracking with a full audit trail
    • Control of externally provided processes (clause 8.4): scoreable supplier audits with re-evaluation and audit history
    • Management review inputs (clause 9.3.2): aggregated audit results as structured input
    • Evidence as an exportable report for external certification audits

Power CI – corrective action and improvement (in development)

Power CI covers the entire "improvement" block of ISO 9001:

    • Nonconformity and corrective action (clause 10.2): structured intake of deviations, root cause analysis, action definition and effectiveness verification
    • Complaints (clause 9.1.2 customer satisfaction): intake, evaluation, escalation and tracking of customer complaints
    • Continual improvement (clause 10.3): improvement suggestions and lessons learned with evaluation and implementation workflow
    • Linkage to Power QMS (controlled documents) and Power Audit (findings as corrective action triggers)

Important: Power CI is currently in development. Until it is generally available, we recommend a supplementary Power App or a third-party tool that can be migrated later.

Power Risk – risks and opportunities (in development)

ISO 9001:2015 has anchored risk-based thinking as a cross-cutting requirement:

    • Actions to address risks and opportunities (clause 6.1): risk inventory, configurable risk matrix, action tracking and re-evaluation
    • Linkage to processes from Power QMS and findings from Power Audit / Power CI
    • Structured input for the management review (clause 9.3.2)

Power Risk is coming soon. Until release, a supplementary solution is required – typically a controlled spreadsheet or a lean Power App.

Power Knowledge – knowledge and competence (in development)

Extends the read confirmations from Power QMS with a real competence dimension:

    • Organisational knowledge (clause 7.1.6): structured capture and maintenance of organisational knowledge
    • Competence (clause 7.2): competence matrix, training evidence, effectiveness assessment
    • Onboarding paths for regulated roles
    • Training history as evidence for external audits

Power Contract – contract management (in development)

    Relevant for the supplier side:

    • Control of externally provided processes, products and services (clause 8.4): supplier contracts, quality agreements
    • Deadline and renewal management
    • Linkage to supplier evaluations from Power Audit

Power Safety & Power Maintenance – infrastructure and work environment

Often underestimated but explicitly in the standard:

    • Power Safety – occupational safety and incident reporting: also covers clause 7.1.4 environment for the operation of processes
    • Power Maintenance – maintenance of production-critical equipment: relevant for clause 7.1.3 infrastructure and clause 8.5.1 control of production and service provision

What Power IMS does not cover for ISO 9001

Very little – which is the strength of the standard compared to regulated industry standards. Two points remain:

    • Calibration of monitoring and measuring resources (clause 7.1.5): no dedicated module, usually handled by a supplementary Power App or third-party tool
    • Incoming, in-process and final inspections for production (clause 8.6): no QC inspection plan module; Power QMS controls the inspection documents, operational capture happens in a specialist tool

    Recommended stack for ISO 9001

    Pragmatic and stepwise:

    • Power QMS as the core (documents, processes, competence evidence, context)
    • Power Audit for internal and supplier audits
    • Power CI (once available) for corrective action, complaints and improvement
    • Power Risk (once available) for clause 6.1
    • Power CI for improvement management and management review
    • Power Knowledge (once available) for competence management
    • Power Maintenance & Power Safety for infrastructure and work environment
    • Microsoft Purview / compliance center for a tenant-wide audit trail

    Conclusion

For ISO 9001 the coverage by Power IMS is already very high today – Power QMS and Power Audit fully cover the most demanding and audit-critical parts of the standard. With the availability of Power CI, Power Risk and Power Knowledge the suite closes the remaining core requirements completely.

For organisations with an existing Microsoft 365 landscape this is the most pragmatic path to a certifiable QMS: data stays in the own tenant, the licence and permission model is established, and the QMS core can go live in days.
